Press Announcements FDA approves Zelboraf and companion diagnostic test for late-stage skin cancer

I have joked with my med onc that if he wants a drug to get approved by the FDA all he has to do is try and get me in the trial! First it was Ipi and now the BRAF mutation drug. It's pretty amazing that rather than the typical Chemo's we are being taken down a path where there is target gene therapy. Basically what the BRAF inhibitor does is target a specific cell mutation (please don't hate if I have this somewhat wrong - I'm an engineer... not a doctor! haha).

There is still a LONG way to go for a cure. It shows great results but they aren't sustainable. After time the genes find another way to mutate and grow. But still - it's great progress. This is the 2nd major approval for the treatment of Melanoma this year after going 13 years with nothing approved.
